Centre for Gender Studies (ZGS)

The Centre for Gender Studies (ZGS) has been a central scientific unit of the University of Bremen since 1998. It offers an academic structure to bring together theoretical and empirical gender research of various disciplines. Members of the ZGS at the same time are members of various departments.

A distinctive feature of the ZGS is the cooperation across disciplines, in particular between science and engineering on the one side and cultural and social sciences on the other. This cooperation contributes to the development of new interdisciplinary research approaches and also generates impulses for disciplinary gender research. Topics in the past have been e.g. „Construction of Body and Gender“ and „The Balkan Wars and Gender Dynamics in Violent Conflicts“. Current projects deal with gender and sustainability; gender and consumption; gender and EU-politics; gender, service work and information technology; intersectionality; and intersexuality.

A 4-semester Gender Studies program for advanced students and those in continuing education (ending with a certificate) recently has been expanded to become a Gender Studies minor for bachelors. This program is offered in close cooperation with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Women and Gender of Bremen’s partner university in Oldenburg.
